While Discussing the last Presidential debate, one of the topics that really struck me was abortions and stem cell research. We talked about it in my American Studies class a bit, and I also talked with one of my close friends about it.
Basically, Obama is for abortions and McCain is against abortions. But here's the tricky part: Obama is for all types of stem-cell research whereas McCain kind-of supports of stem cell research. How can he kind-of support stem cell research? Isn't it all them same? No.
There are two types of stem cell research. The first type of stem cell is called Embryonic stem cells which are (according to wikipedia.com) cultures of cells from a 4-5 day old embryo. Some of these cells that are used for research come from aborted babies. The second type of stem cell is called Adult Stem Cells. Which are (according to wikipedia) any cell that is found in a developed organism. So, these cells can come from anyone or anything.
To answer the question of what McCain supports, he supports ONLY Adult stem cell research and does NOT support Embryonic stem cell research because they mostly come from aborted babies. So saying, "McCain does not support stem cell research," is not entirely true.
So here's my problem. How can McCain not support abortion? Abortion should be avalible to anyone because of many reasons:
1. Let's say for example, people were not allowed to get abortions. This would not hurt the wealthy people because if they really wanted to get an abortion they have the money to go to Canida or Europe. However, the poor population would not have the money to either get birth control or to go somewhere to get an abortion.
2. Abortions should be an option for underaged teenagers. Without abortions, there would be many more pregnant teens in America. According to Planned parenthood.com 1 in 3 women get an abortion before the age of 45. Without abortions we would have som many more "Juno's" in america.
3. It's the right of women. We have always had a male run the country deciding on the rights of women. There's something wrong there. It's the women's body and it should be her choice of how she treats it.
Those are 3 among many reasons why I am for abortion. Where do you stand? Are you Pro Life or Pro choice?
Of course, the Church's position on abortion takes no more notice of the details of biology than it does of the reality of human suffering.It has been estimated that 50 percent of all human conceptions end in spontaneous abortion, usually without a woman even realizing that she was pregnant. In fact, 20 percent of all reconized pregnancies end in miscarriage. There is an obvious truth here that cries out for acknowledgment: If God exists, He is the most prolific abortionist of all.

ReplyDeleteI am Pro Choice and my biggest issue with the McCain campaign is that "they" are against abortion even in the case of rape. To me that is beyond disgusting that someone would force a woman who has been through such a horrific and painful expierience to carry and have her rapist's baby. That woman would not only constantly be reminded of that trama, but also have to deal with the physical struggly of being pregnant. In some cases this could lead to many other major problems,for example what if a woman who dose not have a lot of money and has to work to suport her self get's raped and becomes pregnant? She might not be able to work and suppport herself all the while carrying a baby she was forced to have. The idea that the government would allow such an thing happen to a woman makes me furious. I believe that if in nothing else, in cases of rape abotrtion should be allowed.
ReplyDeleteFirstoff I kind of agree with McCain on this issue. Ofcourse taking away the right to abortion would be a hastle. But McCain is a federalist and believes in state rights. Abortion should be a state issue not a national issue. Indivdual States should decide whether or not they are capable to ban abortion without major repurcussions. And ofcourse some states will agree, some will disagree, so abortion would not be completely banned or allowed. The thing people keep forgetting about abortion is the legal hypocrasy of it all. If someone were to kill a pregnant women they would get two counts of murder. But if a women gets an abortion it is completely legal. Wheres the logic in that?
ReplyDeleteThe baby isn't even a real human yet. I think the problem with killing a pregnant women is completely different. I feel like those charges should depend on how far along she is in the pregnancy. Of course, that is digging into an entire different issue that will get very complicated. Abortion has a lot of different factors into it. I mean if you want to go as far as abortion kills babies that don't even have hearts yet, then wouldn't masturbating or getting your eggs or ovaries removed also kill potential children?
ReplyDeleteThink about this: People are still going to try to terminate their pregnancies, even when abortion is illigal. I know it sounds crazy, but the whole coat hanger myth could be a reality. Isn't it just better to keep abortion a safe option in case pregnancy happens? Who wants people to try to get rid of it on their own, with no medical help?
ReplyDeleteI agree with Carrie, the "moral" position of the Church on this matter is now fully and horribly incarnated in the country of El Salvador. In El Salvador, abortion is now illegal under all circumstances. there are no exeptions for rape or incest. The moment a woman shows up at a hospital with a perforated uterus, indicating that she has had a back-alley abortion, she is shackled to her hospital bed and her body is treated as a crime scene. Forensic doctors soon arrive to examine her womb and cervix. there are women now serving prison senences THIRTY YEAR LONG for terminating their pregnancies.
